Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems have revolutionized water purification across global industries, providing vital processing and boiler feed water. MVR systems utilize a mechanical compressor (centrifugal fan or roots blower) to recompress the clean overhead vapor, raising its temperature and enthalpy. This compressed vapor is then reused as the heating medium in the same stage. This design eliminates the need for fresh steam under steady-state operation, reducing energy consumption to 15–25 kWh per ton of evaporated water.
In a falling film evaporator, liquid is distributed evenly across the inner surfaces of vertical tubes, flowing downward as a thin film. Heat is applied from the outside of the tubes. This thin-film flow yields high heat transfer coefficients and short residence times, making it well-suited for heat-sensitive liquids. Proper distribution is critical to prevent dry spots and scaling.
Forced circulation evaporators use high-capacity pumps to drive liquid through heat exchanger tubes at high velocities, suppressing boiling inside the tubes. Boiling occurs when pressure drops as the fluid enters the flash separator. This design prevents scaling on the heat exchanger surface, making it suitable for crystallization and treating high-fouling RO reject brines.
This configuration recovers thermal energy from low-pressure exhaust steam, dryer vapors, or flue gases to drive the evaporation process. Integrating waste heat sources reduces operating costs, making it a viable option for starch refining, grain processing, and ethanol facilities.
